Recently, I headed to our company’s national tour event, Skinapalooza, talking about how to take care of our skin and have ‘safe sun’ out there this summer. One of the biggest take aways from that event was surrounding exfoliation (and of course sunblock, sunblock, sunblock!).

Did you know if you don’t regularly exfoliate that you are wasting your money? Why, you ask? Because you are applying products to dead skin cells more so than healthy new cells! So what about us sensitive (skin) folks?

If you’re like me…you didn’t even KNOW you had sensitive skin, let alone what that means for how you’re supposed to take care of it. As I’ve been working in this business I have learned a lot of the do’s and don’ts to keep sensitive skin happy. One of the main things is to pay attention to triggers.

For me, it’s topical ingredients and sometimes metal or food, and always HOT water. (Coming out of the shower BRIGHT red is not normal, people!) For most people suffering with rosacea, psoriasis or eczema, our triggers are pretty similar, except for foods. To keep the moisture barrier (your skin) happy, here are a few tips:

1. Take cool showers (luke warm)
2. Make sure you wash with a gentle cream wash (non-lathering)
3. Heal the skin by applying a repair treatment followed by a moisturizer
4. And lastly, PROTECT the skin with sunblock every day (…see the info-graphic for why this is important!),

You also always want to be careful introducing new products (spot-test carefully!) or else you whole face could explode in a furious mess! (It seems to trigger me into cystic acne! yay!)

I hope this helps some of you out there suffering and clueless how to stop the cascading effect of the inflammatory reactions… say no to steroid creams long-term, and be aware of your triggers! For me, when I was a kid in high school, I was picked on for everything, and my skin just made me want to hide worse. I would literally use my hair to hide my face. (Remember Cousin It, anyone?) I definitely lacked self-esteem and my uncontrollable acne didn’t help…

Now, I’m so proud of how amazing my skin looks and the amazing person I’ve grown into that I’ve reconnected with several people from high school. One woman I reconnected with, I found out we had so much in common, including animal rescue, that it really made me glad I took the leap to start the conversation. …And I don’t have to hide behind my hair anymore with my horrible skin. Extra bonus! The pimply, awkward, shy girl is no more! Huzzah!

Why is my skin so dry?

Today’s health/skin care tip: This comes from Nurse Mary Radford with the question, “Why is my skin dry no matter how much moisturizer I use?” Well, the short answer is that your skin piles up dead skin cells which clog and prevent your moisturizers from sinking in as effectively. In order to remedy the situation, try using an exfoliator, one to 3 times a week. (Microderm abrasion pastes are great for this!) Not only will your moisturizers work more effectively, but the exfoliator will help skin cell turnover which promotes younger, healthier looking skin! If you’d like to learn more about microderm abrasion, this is my recommended reading on the subject!

Skincare with Mary: How it all started!

To those who don’t know me, I have had acne my whole life. I have been allergic to the medications that typically treat acne and didn’t figure this out until well into my teenage years. Needless to say, many a harsh chemical and treatment were prescribed to me with little to no effect or severe worse reactions that outweighed the benefits (if any). Little did I know at a young age I had so many allergies to topical agents that these would likely do more damage than good!

I thought this life-long problem was going to stick with me forever in a very severe way. (And at 38 now, I can say, it still hadn’t gone away!) However, in the down economy, while looking for a job since I had been laid off 5 years ago after going back to school for my employer to achieve art director status (I’m a graphic designer by trade)… something new came into my life and has changed it forever. While skin care may not have been my number one choice for a new career move… it has resonated with me in a way I never thought possible. I am now given the opportunity help people like myself who never thought they could have clear, beautiful skin and the confidence that goes along with it.
